One of Orkney's oldest family-run businesses, Argo's is a popular fixture on the main shopping streets of Stromness and Kirkwall. Don't leave it too late to visit either location, as their artisan baked bread, rolls and cakes disappear fast from well-laden shelves. Brown, white, corn, muesli and wholemeal are just some of the rolls on offer, while cakes with more lurid colours of icing stand out amongst old-fashioned temptations such as paradise slices, treacle pancakes and custard tarts. Biscuits to take home include perkins, Orkney bere (a traditional milled meal) shortbread and giant flakey water biscuits which are perfect with local crumbly Grimbister cheese.
