Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2011 edition.

A pebble’s throw from Portobello beach, Kitchener’s is divided in two, half functioning as a bustling shop and deli with a busy takeaway trade and the other half serving up breakfasts, lunches and coffees at a handful of small tables. The menu focuses on organic, local and ethically sourced ingredients (most of which are on sale in the adjoining deli) and includes café staples such as breakfast rolls, soups, toasties and cheese platters as well as ‘bigger bites’ like grilled goat's cheese on toast with red pepper and coriander salsa and the ‘hot box’: melted camembert with toast and chutney. Sourcing quality produce is at the heart of Kitcheners’ ethos – your breakfast is likely to be home grown, with porridge from Edinburgh-based Stoats, Scottish cheeses from IJ Mellis and local, free-range eggs. It’s a bit cramped and could be cosier but everything tastes good and wholesome and is proudly and lovingly served by delightful and attentive staff. You’ll leave happy.

  • High point: Locally and ethically sourced produce
  • Low point: A bit pricey
The Larder

Listed in The Larder – in the shops now or buy online.

Popular with locals, Kitchener's Deli offers an ideal stop for a warming bowl of homemade soup or to simply stock up the kitchen at home with organic honeys and jams or freshly baked cakes. Their hearty supply of locally sourced bread often disappears by lunchtime, and its rustic rolls and wholesome tin loaves offer suitable accompaniments to their cheeses. Reflecting their commitment to Scottish produce, you'll find Scottish Dunsyre Blue and Mull of Kintyre Cheddar sitting among European varieties.
