Mongolia may be best known for its goat broth, yak butter and fermented mare’s milk, but it’s the sheer incongruity of Khublai Khan’s that draws most people in. Although there is an element of gimmickry – not least the chance (by prior arrangement) to dress one of your party up in full Genghis garb – the experience, and it is an experience, is enjoyable for those who don’t take themselves, or their food, too seriously. And, despite the fact that yak is on the menu in name only, and there are but few baby octopi at large in the Gobi, the freestyle set-up gives you a chance to sample half the population of Edinburgh Zoo. The eat-all-you-want policy allows you to taste all manner of creatures, including camel and zebra, and you can either follow suggested menus or, more rewarding, try out your own combos from the extensive selections of herbs, spices and sauces to hand. Once you’ve filled your bowl with either rice or noodles and then added the desired selection of meat, veg and seasonings, the loyal grill-Mongol will do the rest.
- High point: The menu reads like Noah's inventory
- Low point: Grill is not charcoal but gas

Absolutely dreadful restaurant - the food ingredients were tired, the meat (with refried rice) was overcooked whereas the vegetables undercooked and the vegetables still tasted of detergent. Just awful food - we were not drinking unlike the majority of the punters beside us who kept the waiters away from our table so we had poor service as well. Reminded me of really bad student food. Inedible - we did not go up for our several servings - all 5 of us felt the same - and we all had different food combination. If you care about food and the balance of ingredients don't eat here.

I think PaulB has mis-read. It is listed under Round the World not vegetarian.

WHY ON EARTH is this place listed under 'vegetarian' restaurants when it serves ostrich, venison, springbok, wildboar, zebra, crocodile etc? Please can someone move it somewhere more appropriate?

A bunch of us visited this rest recently and were gob smacked! We paid £19.95 for a 3 course meal including the BBQ as the main course where you can eat as much as you like. The great things about this place are the choice of meats - including the likes of ostrich, venison, springbok, wild boar, zebra and crocodile (as well as more usual stuff and seafood); the freshness of all the ingredients; the relaxed, helpful staff; the authentic decor and the Mongolian beer!
Also, both the starters and desserts are a wee bit different - Yak ribs! and all homemade.
We also saw them dress up a chap who was on a Stag night in full Mongolian robes and hat and seat him on a huge wooden throne. They also stuck a huge firework in his dessert - great fun!
If you fancy a meal with a difference can't think of anywhere better.
