Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

The Republic Bier Halle, originally on Gordon Street, with a sister city-centre branch now called Cassette, and one in the West End, offers an Eastern European basement-bar experience. Seated at the striking wood block tables, the minimalist décor dimly lit and cosy, you can choose from an impressive range of 70 international beers, and the joy of lifting a two-pint stein of Czech beer is only enhanced by the fact that it comes with a free hotdog. The menu offers tapas-style dishes to revitalise drinkers, such as daily special curries or the hearty goulash, huge melting chunks of beef and peppers in a rich meaty sauce, served with crusty organic bread. Larger meals are covered by ever-present offers, such as lunchtime deals and two-for-one pizzas and pastas, making the Republic excellent value for money. The thin crispy pizzas might come topped with Parma ham, sweet balsamic vinegar and crisp, peppery rocket, or, for a more Scottish feel, Stornaway black pudding and a free-range egg. Of the pasta dishes, meatballs with penne pasta are recommended: huge, spicy meaty chunks complemented by a rich, garlicky tomato sauce. The Republic offers hearty food with good beer, while the West End branch has a dedicated dining area for a more romantic meal.

  • High point: Great range of international beers
  • Low point: Menu focused on pizza and pasta

The pizzas in the Bier Hall are definatly not a low point, they are gorgeous and in fact the best reason to go there. Excellent value for money on 2 for 1 pizzas and pasta, great service and relaxed atmosphere.
