Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Tucked around the corner from the Festival Theatre, B’est is one of those 'you know it or you don’t' type places. Unsurprisingly, due to its location and set-menu pricing structure it’s been discovered and nurtured by university students and staff. Due to its size, spanning backwards to fit in 140 covers, it’s also popular with large groups, making it the ideal venue for the "Faulty Towers Experience" during the Edinburgh Fringe. The rest of the year, this may not be the trendiest venue but you could do far worse when seeking a budget pre-theatre choice. Fat, juicy mussels in a rich Provençal tomato sauce, ideal for bread dunking, is a fantastic starter and a grilled goat's cheese tartlet is creamy and smooth. Mains are less successful: an over-cooked haunch of venison is drowned in a powerful redcurrant sauce while a nice baked salmon fillet is accompanied by bland ratatouille veg. B’est comes into its own at the end, however, with a really good, sweet lemon crêpe or the traditional home-made vanilla crème brûlée. Overall, B’est is about good food in a friendly atmosphere, and excellent value for money.

  • High point: Hearty French food, great value
  • Low point: Dated décor makes it feel a bit dingy

Food was very good- particularly liked the medallion of pork. There is, however, obvious pressure on the staff to rush you through the process. We had barely opened our menus before being invited to order. My girlfriend replied "give us one minute and we'll be there", whereupon the waiter retreated a few paces, waited about 5 seconds, then advanced again, saying "decided?" Since we were in a hurry anyway this was more amusing than annoying, but it did detract a little from an otherwise excellent meal.

We both really enjoyed the food, wine and service in the Best Restaurant last weekend. My Girlfriend and I have ate in many restaurants in edinburgh and have been surprised to stumble upon and read the above reviews.

Maybe it's time to go back and try again, we certainly enjoyed the dining experience, only visted this restaurant in edinburgh once so can't really say.

We will certainly book a table again... http://www.best-restaurant.co.uk/

The worst dining experience i have had in Edinburgh.

The service was bad, we were both rushed and neglected. There were 3 main options of the menu in the middle of the evening. We were sat out back of a massive dining experience which was noisy and resulted in the 3 waitresses serving over 100 customers . We spoke to the manager and he pawned us off to the waitresses, offended we spoke to him again and were spoken to rudely and in a confrontational manner. I would have refused to pay if i wasn't so embarassed for our waitresses, who was almost in tears. The worst management i have seen. I would never recommend it to anyone.

It was not the b'est..
Certainly not during the festival anyway. Overbooked for pre theatre, we were ignored, rushed, were never offered the wine list, an ordered drink was ordered 3 times before it was received. Personally my lamb dish was forgotten then when it did arrive it was unseasoned and dry as a bone, this after specifying not once but twice it should be pink.. if I went on to say it came with the wrong veg as well you could understand why I didn't pay. Avoid during the festival.
