Kilmun Aboretum
The Kilmun Forest research plots were established in the 1930's to monitor the success of a variety of exotic tree species in the humid west coast environment. With the variety of species, mostly conifers, the change into the autumn season brings an interesting contrast of broadleaves with conifers as a backdrop. Kilmun is laced with footpaths (see forest walks) beautiful and unique in Scotland because you see here 162 tree species planted not just as individuals but as groups of mini forests. You are not looking at 'a' Monkey Puzzle, say, or 'a' Mountain Hemlock, but at groves of these remarkable trees drawn in from all the world.
