This legendary Scottish restaurant is hailed to have changed the way Glaswegians eat. Forty years ago The Chip was the first Scottish restaurant to champion regional dishes and locally sourced products. This ethos is still evident today in produce such as Oban-landed squid, Ayrshire chanterelles, Inverurie sirloin and even, according to the manager, garlic "from down the road". Starters include monkfish served with haricot beans; the firm, meatiness of the fish balanced with a tang of fennel and the light crunch of a peashoot tempura. For mains, Haunch of Moscow roe deer (that’s Moscow, Ayrshire), although small in portion is soft, pink and served with a crisp Kailkenny croquette. All presentation is meticulous and smart staff know their food. There is something natural and intuitive about the restaurant: greenery is draped throughout the cobbled courtyard and a lush and leafy mural by Alisdair Gray sits humbly by the door. Although no longer with us, the spirit of Ronnie Clydesdale, founder of "The Chip", lives on in the fresh, locally sourced products and Scottish dishes cooked with imagination and passion.
- High point: Wow factor menu and wine list to match
- Low point: Portions can be disappointingly small

We had actually initially wanted to try the Chip Bistro upstairs but it was shut so we were told that the main restaurant did the bistro menu. It didn't so we decided to stay anyway - the food we ordered was exceptionally bland, poorly designed, badly presented and cold. And remarkably expensive at that. The staff seemed either disinterested or too-cool-for-school. Looking through the wine list there were ridiculous wines one notably being over £2000 a bottle! Not to belittle my home town but Glasgow isn't exactly Tokyo! Who buys that stuff? And if they did they certainly wouldn't be dining at The Chip!
This is a complete over-pretentious and nonsense establishment existing soley off its numerous awards acquired far in the past when it was presumably somewhere worth visiting, today however - avoid. (thus said, their bar/pub upstairs is actually quite friendly and quirky - in a positive way)

I'm not usually one for negative reviews but the disgusting service last night has left me with no choice. From the comments above it seems as though my group was not the only one to leave unhappy. What a shocking excuse for staff! Snappy brats who didn't want to be there. To these staff members I say - "If you work in a bar, your job is to politely serve drinks to the customers. Don't be put out if someone has the audacity to ask for a damn drink!".
Zero stars.

The behaviour of the staff in the upstairs bar ranged from regrettable to appalling. We were harassed numerous times by a member of staff to vacate an area of the premises when 1am arrived, to finish our drinks in the main upstairs bar area. We complied with this request only to be harassed by a second member of staff upon reaching the main bar to now leave the building without finishing our drinks (which were sold to us only minutes before 1am). This member of staff commented that he wasn't being paid to be there after 1am, didn't care that we hadn't finished our drinks and wanted to get home. When a member of our party reasonably objected to his comments another member of staff weighed in to tell him to "shut the fuck up". A request was then made to a disinterested bar maid to speak to the manager, who passed our complaint over to a senior member of staff who was useless in addressing the matter. Finally someone owned up to being the manager and was also of no help. To add insult to injury a member of our party was harassed out of the building by security, while the complaint was registered, and this member of security was being very aggressive and making false claims about Scottish Licensing Laws, particularly which laws we were allegedly breaking (which we were in fact not). Suffice it to say a complaint is being made to the owner, and disciplinary action encouraged against staff involved, particularly the verbal abuser.

Such a waste. Have been quite a few times and the setting is clearly the selling point. But what a tired menu and kitchen and such a glib disregard for customer service. The staff ensure you are in no doubt that you are lucky to be spending a lot of money here. And that's what you'll do. Just make sure your post-purchase delusions are at the ready! Alternatively, avoid.
