Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Sitting proudly atop a Southside hill, Agenda is housed in an impressive art deco building frequented by thirsty locals and architecture students on a mission. Tucked behind the main bar in a separate room, the restaurant has subdued lighting and comfortable booths, which create a relaxed, informal mood - which, unfortunately, can be interrupted by the regular bleeping of an alarm on the bar that announces when food is ready. The weekday menu offers standard pub fare such as steak pie, nachos and fish and chips, while the à la carte (available at weekends) provides more ambitious meat and fish dishes, which are more in keeping with the chic bistro vibe. Thai fish-cakes, accompanied by a punchy soy chilli dip, have a nice bite and contain decent chunks of fish, but the chicken satay turns out to be chicken in a watery sauce that lacks much hint of peanut. A juicy Lincolnshire sausage bursts with herby flavour, and while a moist and meaty burger is tasty enough, it has a somewhat rubbery cheese topping.

  • High point: Impressive architecture
  • Low point: Cheesy 80s soft rock soundtrack
