This review is taken from the 2010 edition.
In its three years of existence, Mama San, formerly St Judes, has gained a reputation for itself owing to its chic decor and its unusual 21st century dinner dance experience. This cocktail bar/restaurant/lounge and club all rolled into one offers a lot more than food. Fairy lights and the waft of incense lure diners into the basement entrance. The cocktail menu is vast and the quick arrival of a raspberry mojito certainly livens up the food-ordering process. A starter of char-grilled chicken satay, with a deliciously light peanut sauce is well presented. The Indonesian tiger prawns in the teriyaki stir-fry are plump and full of flavour and are complimented by the sweet yet salty spicy soy sauce. The proof of the fusion is in the pudding and the lemon and stem ginger posset is served with some home-made Scottish shortbread.
- High point: Keep your table and party into the small hours
- Low point: Not many small taster dishes available

Mama SanReport -
This is the first review I have written. Sadly it is inspired by the awful experience we had at Mama San. The fact that the restaurant was empty didn't deter us. It all got off to a good start as the service was therefore quick and the waitress was very pleasant. The food was okay but nothing to write home about. What amazed us beyond belief was when the owner swaggered in with a face like fizz (the grunt to the waitress as he breezed past in his pink shirt kind of alerted us that he must have been the owner). Not content with freezing over the atmosphere on entry he proceeded to instruct some workmen he brought with him to start hammering and drilling just a few metres away from us. Had we not just started our meal we would have sent it back and gone elsewhere. Like true Brits we didn't complain too much, just left the meal, paid for the awful experience with our hard earned cash and vowed to let everyone we know aware of the disrespect the owner of Mama San has for his customers. Give this awful place a miss.
