Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Fifi and Ally's Wellington Street branch, half restaurant and half deli/café, is brimming with designer chic from the monochrome scheme featuring dark walls and seats with white tables to the exposed beams and the unisex toilet, all softened by candlelight glinting in glass ornaments and elaborate mirrors. The various menus – breakfast, all day, after dark and set lunch/early bird – are more down to earth, with a selection of local and European dishes. Starters include a light and airy Mull cheddar soufflé with a salad of pear and walnut and a crispy bruschetta topped with rustic Tuscan sausage and white beans. Mains are hearty fare, from the daytime sandwiches and chunky salads to the evening choices such as deliciously tender braised lamb shank with pumpkin and cheese mash, Moroccan spiced chicken or a range of regional beef dishes with sirloin, steak burger or char-grilled rump. On the menu are also Trad Open Boards, large snack platters with a choice of Celtic, Moroccan or Italian themes. Desserts are indulgent and wicked – meringue mountains, sticky puddings and chocolate mousses abound – which rather sums up a visit to this unique restaurant.

  • High point: Admirable dedication to regional produce
  • Low point: Oliver Twist showtunes blaring from the stereo
