The Scottish Parliament
Constructed at a cost of £431 million, and lauded as an architectural marvel, the Scottish Parliament is Edinburgh's most controversial and most intriguing building. A striking mix of granite, oak and Caithness stone, elements of Enric Miralles' design emulate the surrounding landscape but it was also said to have been inspired in places by the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Geometric lines and shards of concrete give way to swirling leaf designs and iconic 'thinking pods', where MSPs can gather their thoughts before entering the Debating Chamber. Visit on a weekday to watch the parliament in session and join a guide-led tour for a proper look around all the nooks and expensive crannies.
