The winding, uphill approach to the family-run Portcullis is a treat, with the Ochils on the right and Stirling Castle looming to the left. A converted schoolhouse built in 1787, it’s open and uncluttered inside, just a few historical figurines dotting the walls alongside whisky-related paraphernalia. There’s space to crowd round the 7ft-tall ornate fireplace and spread out with one of the steaks that dominate the bar menu. Booking is advised for the more sophisticated evening fare, although summer diners can spread outdoors. Four en suite bedrooms mean you don’t have to stumble downhill into town after a boozy evening.
