Send us more details about this place.

Thanks to publishers DC Thomson, Dundee is home to Scottish institutions, The Beano, The Dandy, Oor Wullie and The Broons. As you might suspect from its name, Big Bairn Books specialises in annuals of the above cartoons and comics, and much more besides, all housed in a ramshackle wee shop with surprises in every corner. Big Bairn also regularly stock second hand books, an eclectic and idiosyncratic collection which takes in everything from hardback Burns and Scott collections to books on everything from UFOs and bird watching to local history and geography. A dusty treasure trove of a place.

Order moules marinieres or 'le petit lunch' at the Bon Appetit French restaurant in Exchange Street, walk up the street to the cheese shop for a nice piece of cheese to take home, then spend a nostalgic half hour in Big Bairn Bookshop where you'll find Beanos, Dandys, Angela Brazils, Dr Doolittle and Arthur Ransome. Move on to look for more serious stuff in the double stacked bookshelves, organised into categories but not too regimented, a fascinating and eclectic selection. Owner and assistant are friendly, helpful and knowedgeable. Prices are reasonable too.
