A pub no bigger than your sitting room amidst the affluent surroundings of the New Town is always going to seem like a fish out of water, yet it’s Kay’s homely approach which keeps regulars coming back. A staunch rugby boozer, it features a coal fire and simple lunches of mince and tatties, haggis or pie, beans and chips between noon and 2.30pm. There are around 50 malts and seven cask ales behind the bar, and the in the library in the back room guests can read the books or join in a game of cribbage or Scrabble.

I was looking forward to having a pint in this bar for a couple of weeks. What a disappointment!
Whilst the location is lovely, the decor warm and inviting (and with scrabble) the barman (though he appeared warm and friendly) was obnoxiously rude about customers behind their backs (overheard by us), he clearly has an issue with women in his establishment (seen and not heard preferably if they are to be tollerated).
His attempt at sophistication was shambollic, his haughty self regard is reminisent of the staff at the canny mans. and the rest of the customers were of a similar ilk. noisy mislpaced snobbery which had the wiff colonialisation, inbreeding and poor rugby-club ettiquette . i am thoroughly disappointed that this lovely little place was ruined.
Plus! £9.50 for two drinks is awful and £3.50 for a pint plain cheeky. Save yourself the effort and visit clarks bar for a truely down to earth warm pub feel.
