Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

With its antlers, tartan and tongue-in-cheek name, this might seem at first glance like another tourist-centric set-up. Instead, Whiski delivers a buzzy atmosphere, some fine food and a drinks list to satisfy the most specific of whims. The (somewhat pricey) menu holds no major surprises – a good Cullen skink starter, a generous but frustratingly dry Whiski burger lifted by good bacon and a smoky whisky and onion chutney. Salmon with whisky and orange jus sticks to the spirited theme, and has a touch of the posher-than-pub-grub to it. Though the ‘craft bottlings’ are a good showcase for the excellent Thistly Cross and Innis & Gunn, it’s the almost endless whisky list that is really notable. Not content with listing over 250 single malts, they’ll also mix them into a score of classic and reinvented cocktails for those who prefer their drams with more than a dash of water.

  • High point: A crowd pleaser in its location, drinks and food
  • Low point: Have another nip instead of pudding

Reviews of Whiski (119 High Street, Edinburgh)

3. Darren, Edinburgh – 24 August 2010, 5:43pm1 starWhiskiReport

Today i visited Whiski (High Street, Edinburgh) with my wife and father in-law (visiting Edinburgh for the festival). We decided we would grab a bite to eat and a quick drink. We waited over 40 mins for our food to come out, when the food came out my father-in-laws Burger was'nt burnt...it was cremated - 6 french fries (under- cooked), one leaf of lettuce on an untoasted bun...handed it back. I had the fish and chips...the batter was a disgrace...like the fryer hadnt ever been cleaned in months, so tough the ends of the fish could not be consumed unless you have a full set of re-inforced titanium gnashers. My wife had the pasta...i really felt for her as she was really hungry but couldnt bring herself to eat it...pasta was tinted brown with (what looked like) used vegetable oil -overdone mushrooms and bits of (what looked like).....the edges of our 1st beef burger that was cremated. If you are going to charge £10 for a burger (plain burger) £10 for fish and chips, and £9 for pasta...at least look at the plate before you serve it and ask yourself chef....would i pay £29 for that...naw you wouldny - other than this the staff were freindly and the settings are nice....could really do with reducing there food prices/or just not being so lazy/lackluster in the kitchen. shame as well as in great location.

Just had to respond when I saw this review of WHISKI as just can hardly believe we are talking about the same place! We eat a Whiski regularly as the food is just so good there, great steaks, macaroni cheese and fabulous lunch deals. This place is our top choice for work do's and no-one can say £4.95 for a soup and sandwich is expensive (would cost more from the O'Briens across the road). It is our favourite haunt for after work drinks aswell, the atmosphere is brilliant and all the staff are fantastic, friendly and welcoming and they even know some of us by name by now. WHISKI gets a huge thumbs up from us, great food, great bar, great bar staff.

I had lunch here with 4 others and the food was frankly TERRIBLE. My steak and ale pie looked like someone had thrown it at the plate from a distance, the steak with pretty grim and zero ale. Cousin had the haggis which he said was tasteless (also didnt look very nice), my fiance had a steak which he'd asked to be cooked "rare to medium"... it arrived red inside with blood oozing onto the plate, and not a good piece of meat at that. We'd been to Montpelier's the night before where he had a "fantastic" steak, cooked to perfection. All in all, the only person who had reasonable food was my aunt who opted for a lighter bite so had the cullen skink, she said it was ok.

Also, very dour Polish waitress with not the best grasp of english to add to the rotten experience. VERY expensive menu at Whiski and we certainly will never be going back.
