A deep winding staircase leads down from busy Union Street into The Catwalk Rock Lounge, formerly Underworld. As is to be expected from a pub affiliated with The Cathouse, rock music plays a large part here and the predominantly black-clad clientele seem to like it that way, frequently turning out for live gigs on the small stage. Diners are separated from drinkers in an eating area decked out in shades of black and burgundy, featuring candle-lit tables, medieval gothic-effect fixtures and plasma televisions positioned above each booth, playing music videos by acts such as Biffy Clyro and Rage Against the Machine. The Catwalk is currently in the process of expanding its menu to include dishes such as paella and pastas, but still focuses on the Mexican fare of its predecessor. Starters include stuffed jalapeños and lightly spiced, well-seasoned meatballs, while the beef fajitas contain succulent smoky-spiced pieces of beef, peppers and onion. Diners can also create their own pasta dish, mixing pasta type and sauce; the pesto, available with or without chicken, has a creamy, nutty flavour. Desserts include Belgian waffles, heaped with ice-cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce, and a moist and light fudge cake.
- High point: Tasty fajitas
- Low point: Rather bitter house wine
