Hamiltons is a reliable local bar, well-placed to lure the residents and frequenters of Stockbridge in for a bite or a drink. The interior is cleverly divided into sections: a soft seating area by the window is great for coffee and people-watching, and the bar has high tables and chairs for drinks, while a raised restaurant area houses an intimate dining space. Menu items are helpfully labelled to let the diner know which dishes can be adapted for vegetarians and those seeking gluten-free fare. Dinky haggis spring rolls with a sweet chilli dipping sauce are a tasty appetiser. A spectacular salad of goat's cheese, grilled gently and nestled on a mammoth bed of rocket, red chard and chunky beetroot, ticks all the right boxes and comes with a healthy sprinkling of pine nuts. Main courses aren't quite as inspiring: haggis, neeps and tatties are prettily layered, though the haggis arrives in a disproportionately small helping and is crunchily overcooked. A tasteless whisky and chive cream sauce does little to lift the dish. To finish, give the powdery apple crumble a miss and opt instead for Mackie's ice-cream studded with nuggets of chocolate orange. A substantial brunch offering is available at weekends from 11am–4pm.

Food here is excellent, especially if you don't want to have a full blown meal.There are imiaginative salads, grilled skewers plus the sort of thing you might expect from pub grub like fish or burger and chips - all fresh and crispy. BUT....it is is really, really noisy and difficult to have conversation, especially if you are in a large group of people or, even harder, in a tête-à-tête. It's hard to know just whicb bit of the Stockbridge market they are appealing to here. The bar is lively and fun, but the atmophere doesn't transfer well to the dining area, which is a shame as - even though there was a long wait for food on a busy night - the staff are pleasant and polite.
