The relentless traffic on the busy streets of Argyle and Sauchiehall might distract an unwary passer-by from noticing this whimsically elegant coffee house tucked between these arterial city routes. On the other side of huge double-height windows, a stylish room decorated in seaside pastels with plush purple banquettes provides shelter from the chaotic world outside. A glass counter crammed with sandwiches, cakes and cookies is the centrepiece of the space, nearby wooden shelves heaving with pots of fresh herbs and bowls of fruit. Blackboards emblazoned with colourful chalk describe the well-chosen house wines and bottled beers available, as well as a huge range of flavoured coffees. The menu is simple, with standards such as soup, panini and pastries as the main items but fillings such as chicken and bacon caesar or pesto, tomato and mozzarella show some flair. Bowls brimming with hot soup can come in handy half-portions to team with a sandwich and there are kiddie options too. Coffee is made from their own blend, except for the locally-famous Vietnamese version which, served with condensed milk, is cloyingly sweet but packs a serious caffeine punch and tastes good with a slice of strawberry cheesecake.

I love Montgomerys! I live just down the road and although there's masses of similar coffee places in the area, it's definitely my favourite. I like the fact it's not table service- you can take your time deciding what you want or sit and wait on someone without feeling rushed.
The hot chocolate is brilliant and I like their paninis too. The cakes, waffles and chocolate brownies (warm with ice cream) are yummy.
Best of all the staff have a sense of humour- since it's a small (but popular) place, at the bottom of the menu it says to share tables at busy times or 'incur the evil eye'! Ha ha.

Below average. Been twice in recent months, and both times less than great. Crap microwaved eggs, orange juice from a bottle in the fridge, rock hard untasty bacon, good coffee, a belgian waffle, £13. Left hungry, partner felt a bit ill.
And reviewer number 1, yes you do have to order at the till, not sure why however as there are plenty of staff doing not very much.
Must try harder.

I'd note to the above poster that Montgomery's isn't table-service, they may have assumed you were waiting on someone.

Went to Montgomerys on Sunday morning hoping for some breakfast. The place was quiet, only two other customers - I sat in the middle of the cafe in plain view of the surly and uncommunicative assistants. They busied themselves on various tasks, (drinking coffee and chatting) while studiosly ignoring me for 15 MINUTES. Eventually I felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable I got up and left.
Note to staff: You are not doing customers a favour by serving them - it is your JOB! If it's beneath you, find something else to do!
Note to management: arrange some customer service training before your business goes off like a damp squib.
Anyway, on a more positive note, I went to Mortons in Byres Rd and had a good breakfast for half the price.
