Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Tucked away in a beautifully central location, Black Bo's is all wooden floors and candle-light, making this haven a beautiful setting for long, relaxed evenings in good company. With a formidable veggie-friendly wine list and friendly atmosphere, it has managed to retain the air of a 'find', despite having a very respectable reputation. The food is nicely spread across a range of influences, with basics such as the hefty tofu burger remaining constant while the others vary often enough to keep regulars interested. Starters are pleasant, with a rather uninspiring garlic bread option offered beside the altogether more appealing seasonal choices. The range isn't huge, but uses fresh ingredients and dares to venture outside vegetarian staples with dishes such as an aubergine pasta bake scattered with juicy grapes. Main courses are served with a side plate of vegetables, cooked to your taste, and are substantial, if a little bland for the expectations built up by the setting and price. Desserts again vary, with some delicious fruit sorbets summing up the meal perfectly: refreshing, pleasant and good to share.

  • High point: Relaxed, friendly atmosphere
  • Low point: Greater depth of flavour would improve the menu
