This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Bang opposite the Festival Theatre, Suruchi (sister to Suruchi Too, in Leith) is a familiar and well-loved resident of Nicholson Street. Opened in 1986, it hasn’t changed much since. The staircase to its first-floor home is looking tired and the decor lacks the chic of more modern curry houses, but the welcome is warm, atmosphere cosy and there are attractive lunch and pre-theatre meal deals. The vast menu – also available in Scottish – features all the regulars but with some novel additions such as venison or haggis fritters. A starter of spinach and king prawn soup is tangy and delicious, but simla chat, a combination of chickpeas, cucumber, spices and banana, is peppery and lacking banana. Tandoori king prawns are huge and meaty with a zesty sauce, while chicken nirvana disappoints as the chicken is dry and seems unrelated to the sauce, which is fragrant with mustard, lemongrass and coconut. Innovative food festivals will feature throughout the year, and the location is central, but maybe it’s time Suruchi had a facelift.
- High point: Excellent service
- Low point: Tired and dingy entrance

Comedically poor service and rather average food, served lukewarm (as, due to the Fawlty Towers levels of waiter/waitress management, it had obviously been sitting in the kitchen for sometime).
After sitting and asking for drinks on THREE seperate occassions - drinks that had been poured and left standing on the bar to warm and flatten for a good 15/20 minutes - my wife actually got up and went to the bar to serve ourselves. Only then for the glass of wine and glass of lemonade to be re-poured and served up again by a confused waiter around 30 minutes after we had first ordered them.
The level of service was nothing less than absymal. The prices are way too high for the quality of the food. And the manager was surly and rude. Other annoyed diners were demanding discounts for long waits and unserved drinks before we left.
Basically, avoid at all costs. Unless you want to pay over the odds for some unexpected comedy at The Fringe and aren't particularly hungry or thirsty. And suffer fools gladly.

Decor very tired and in need of a facelift. Food not very good, strange combinations and not very much, over priced. Was disappointed and won`t be back.

One of my favourite curry rests. Situated on the Southside, 5 mins from Royal Mile and opposite the Festival Theatre. Food is great. Monthly themed nights give you a taste of regional india. A visit during festival time, meant a long wait for food (shortage of waiting staff). It won't put me off as the food is so good. Nearby Cafe India is probably a better option if on a tight schedule - food as good due to lots more staff. Decor wise not great but you can overlook that.

I have been to India several times and probably know my curry better than some restaurant owners. Suruchi has the most innovative Indian food. The Southside is full of restaurants but Suruchi is a gem. I like the fusion cooking with Scottish ingredients, the menu in Scots, the lavish lunch buffet and the location opposite the Festival Theatre. None of the post lager faff here.
