Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

There aren’t many places where you find fashionable students sitting next to an anorak-clad granny who's sitting next to a couple on a date, but that’s what you get at the Rio Café – and it works. Step inside and you enter a 1950s diner – the red leather booths and no-fuss furniture make you smile and want to order a milkshake (good thing they sell them). Like any good café the menu is laminated and crammed with comforting food. The Scottish breakfast is available almost any time of day – or order black pudding, bacon and eggs as a starter portion, just for a wee taste. Mains include a very cheesy macaroni, plus burgers, steak pie, chicken stroganoff and a light and tasty smoked mackerel salad. If you're just in for a coffee, or a beer, then you can buy a Tunnock's teacake to nibble on – or for the full hog they do a mean knickerbocker glory. This is a popular local bar too, where regulars enjoy live jazz sessions and open mic nights, or a game of poker on Sunday evenings.

  • High point: Ice-cream floats remind you of your childhood
  • Low point: Very busy at weekends

8. Pebbles, Glasgow – 6 October 2011, 3:48pm5 starsThe Rio CaféReport

Good, honest, fuss free, comfort food. Great atmospere day or night. Staff are friendly and relaxed. Love the great breakfast selection and really nice to have healthy porridge options. Perfect place to go if you are looking for somewhere relaxed and friendly instead of the many pretentious west end cafes.

7. Spare your health!, Glasgow – 27 March 2011, 10:00pmThe Rio CaféReport

Purchased a Veggie Burger from here today to carry out,£5.95 with some chips, not the cheapest I've bought, it was served to me within 3 minutes, I just assumed it was pre prepared to go out, FRESH I thought!!!! got it home, bit into it not only was it was luke warm, and absolutely SOLID, I dont mean uncooked solid, I mean I couldnt even break it by bending it as hard as I tried, this was clearly served to me in the full knowledge that this was not only reheated, but microwaved prior as well, DONT EAT out of this place,, seriously I was completely disgusted that this was served to me, I did contact the Rio to state that I will!! and I mean WILL, take this up with the Food Standards Agency, spare yourself the grief. an absolutely arrogant ant disgusting place.

Love everything about this place - great decor, nice vibe, fantastic staff who are laid back in that way you only seem to get in Glasgow. Last time I was in the breakfast was a bit of a mess - chef was possibly having a bad day - but this was rectified immediately and generously.

Sorry guys, I really want to rate this place but breakfast here this week was awful! Egg half-cooked, sausage pinkish (cheap, badly cooked or both?), bacon fine. Presentation mediocre. Service and communication excellent.

It's an interesting place, different styles for various time zones but you have to get the basics right. Maybe chef just had a hangover but half-cooked is inexcusable. Still annoyed I didn't complain.

I'm hoping my experience was just a case of being there on the wrong day.

Rio is an outstanding place, as others have said, good food, great music, great live events and excellent staff. I would recommend this place to anyone, and do so on a regular basis.

Great little place, come day or night.
Honest family friendly diner by day, and 'anything goes' entertainment by night.
Friendly and fun staff always pleased to serve you.

I have been to the Rio Cafe a few times now and I have not been dissappointed once. The food is lovely, they do a great breakfast and its a really nice place for a cake and a coffee. The staff have always been attentive without harrassing you. It has a fifties kind of feel and I have taken freinds there to try their ice-cream sundaes which are superb. I would definately reccommend it.
