The historic castle of Blackness was built in the 15th century. It was the main fortified structure in the port town of Blackness, which served the royal burgh of Linlithgow, five miles away. Since then it has doubled several times as a film location, most notably for the Mel Gibson-starring version of Hamlet in 1990.

Built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons, Blackness was never destined to be a peaceful lordly residence; its enduring roles were those of garrison fortress and state prison. Some visitors may find it difficult to access parts of the castle due to uneven surfaces.

• 4m NE of Linlithgow on the Firth of Forth, off the A904 • Open all year. Winter: closed Thursday and Friday • Admission: Adult £4.20 Child £2.10 Concessions £3.20 • VisitScotland grading ★★★★
