Worthy of a visit not least for the fine view overlooking the Water of Leith, the Raj on the Shore is also notable for a fine selection of diverse meals, each of which is cherry-picked from current Indian and Bangladeshi trends by owner and self-styled 'Banglachef' Tommy Miah. A large corner building, the Raj is bright and spacious, although its classic burgundy-tinged interior doesn't offer enough warmth to keep the temperature from dropping of a cold evening. To keep the heat up, a good tip is to order the chicken-based frango no espeto peri-peri, a dizzying combination of Goan, African and Portuguese flavours which lives up to its spicy billing. For those with a more sensitive palate, the chicken chacuti also includes chilli, but this time is complemented with mustard, a lime marinade for the meat and a hint of cashew nuts in the sauce; each flavour is finely balanced so as not to be too overpowering. As the organizer of the International Indian Chef of the Year contest, it is of course in Miah's best interests to ensure that his own fare is up to scratch - and, by and large, he succeeds.

I can't believe it's still open!
I went there with my fiancée once for lunch and will never ever go back again.
First of all, the attitude of the staff was not the most welcoming, but we decided not to be too picky about it. Then the food came and the quality was rather poor. My chicken dish contained some pieces of chicken that were fresh and some that were definitely at least couple of days old. They probably thought that the ridiculous amount of source can hide it... My fiancée was not happy with his dish either. And at the end they tried to rob us as our bill came £10 higher than it should have been... What can I say? If you don't want a heartburn and foul mood after your meal, avoid this place...

I ordered the 'curry in a hurry' meal deal and when I tasted the chicken korma the meat tasted off. When I called to ask them if their chicken was in date they said it was but they cook their meat at lunchtime and leave it constantly cooking all day!!
They offered to give me another curry and I refused and said I wanted a refund. They said I would have to come to the restaurant and bring the curry there. I said no and I would like the delivery driver to come and give me the refund.
They then said 'they were too busy' and hung up on me! I will never go back to The Raj. They do not cook from fresh and their customer service is shocking.

We have not eaten here for years - the one and only time we did, my husband got food poisoning and was very ill for two weeks. This was confirmed food poisoning (confirmed at hospital) and not just a bit of a dodgy tummy. Sounds like things have not changed based on Bella's comments. DO NOT EAT HERE!

Good for takewaways but the restaurant is cold, smelly and always empty. No atmosphere.

I am a little disappointed by the Raj. We used to go there regularly and bought a take-away every weekend.
However, recently I was hospitalised for three days with food poisoning after eating a small amount of a lamb pasanda, which seemed not to have had too many spices added. I called them at the time and they said they would give another one free next time. I was taken to the hospital during the night by ambulance. They were informed that I was in hospital, but not even a phone call from them - or a visit - and they knew our address.
