Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Press four in Harvey Nicks’ lift and you’ll be elevated to a whole floor dedicated to foodie delights. Among these, the Forth Floor Brasserie is slick and sophisticated, from the voice taking bookings to the delivery of the bill. In-between, there’s a real consistency to the quality of the food: Scottish and European classics with an emphasis on local ingredients, with a choice of à la carte or fixed-price menus. Smoked salmon with petite potato scones and herby crème fraîche is a lovely, simple starter, as is corned beef with piccalilli. To follow, twice-roasted pork belly with mashed potato and apple sauce is a sticky-sauced rib-sticker. On the lighter side, oat-coated local mackerel comes with a piquant lemon and caper sauce, crowned with feathery tempura-battered onion rings. Desserts are plentiful and satisfying. Sticky toffee and pear bread and butter puddings jostle for attention with cheesecake and flourless mousse cake, and a welcome bevy of ice creams from local name S Luca. Bag a window table or one on the terrace, if you can. Because as they say on the floors below, the views are to die for.

  • High point: Style with substance
  • Low point: Dimmer switch could be turned up a notch or two.

Reviews of Forth Floor Brasserie (Harvey Nichols, 30–34 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh)

1. Lynn*, Edinburgh – 18 January 2011, 11:59am2 starsForth Floor BrasserieReport

I went on Sunday for lunch for the first time was very disappointed. The plus points were the amazing cocktail and the lovely views. The food was average, I was expecting better and the service was terrible. It was practically invisible by the end of the meal. We had to ask for menus to look at the deserts and then grab another uninterested member of staff to ask if we could perhaps order dessert. I'd perhaps go back for a cocktail but I get the impression they rely on their name alone to bring in the customers and in Edinburgh there are too many amazing places to dine out to be doing that!
