Forth Floor Restaurant
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Casting its gaze over St Andrew Square and the New Town, the Forth Floor seeks to be master of all it surveys. Its style is confident and self aware, if somewhat brash, reflecting the general atmosphere of Harvey Nicks itself. Separated from the food hall, sushi restaurant and brasserie by series of partitions, the atmosphere is loud, fun and buzzy, so don’t plan on an intimate, romantic dinner on busy nights – it’s not why you’re there. The attention to detail, however, is exquisite. Plates are arranged as artistically as the jewellery displays downstairs, with colour, scent and texture contributing to your sensory experience. The delicate flavour of the milk-poached loin of rabbit is set off by an earthy roast fig and glistening, cleansing citrus of grapefruit jelly. Interluding amuse-bouches are laced with truffle oil and other luxuries. Mains continue the clever counterpoint with rich flavours such as braised shin of beef set off with spiced aubergine purée or melting roast guinea fowl with mellow pumpkin purée. Dining here feels as much a dance as a meal, and very swish at that.

  • High point: Delicious views with equally delicious food
  • Low point: Poor acoustics and odd lighting undermine unique setting

Reviews of Forth Floor Restaurant (Harvey Nichols, 30–34 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh)

1. ALB, Edinburgh – 25 August 2010, 8:34pm5 starsForth Floor RestaurantReport

Eaten there 3 times in last year. Once for mothers day. Excellent flavours, well presented, a notch above the rest without trying too hard and failing. Worth the splurge for a treat and great view. If you want the view without the quality and price, go to john lewis. But fixed price meals well worth it here.
