Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Cosy Chesterfield sofas, free wi-fi and widescreen TVs make The Goat a popular sitting room for locals and Kelvingrove visitors who enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, a good selection of drinks and hearty meals. The food, usually served on the mezzanine overlooking the bar, features a range of simple snacks such as olives, hummus and pita, baked potatoes and panini. Appetising starters include a velvety, burnt umber potato and rosemary soup, and a goat's cheese and walnut salad containing colourful leaves, sweet peppers and tangy apple juxtaposed with a creamy cheese. The mains are particularly generous. The home-made burger is slightly dry but lean and is served with a pile of crisp, skinny fries, while the fish-cakes – two enormous discs of spiced fish and potato – are accompanied by sweet chilli sauce and plenty of salad. With the exception of the fries and the local Partick pies, all of the food is made fresh on the premises. A forthcoming lick of paint and new furniture for its spacious outdoor area are set to ensure many folk will continue to get The Goat.

  • High point: Generous portions
  • Low point: Obtrusive TVs
