Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Elegant and sophisticated, the Goat & Grill came under new ownership and was subtly rebranded in 2010. Set over two levels, the lower provides a spacious bar furnished with leather sofas and low-lying tables. Overhead, a mezzanine acts as the main dining area, where you can choose to eat from the à la carte menu, which features Highland shank of lamb and roast pork belly, or the well-constructed bar tapas menu. Along with a couple of traditional Spanish tapas such as chorizo in red wine, this menu offers up more homely bite-sized dishes – battered black pudding being a star, while the meatballs and lemon-coated white bait are also highly recommended. Five to six tapas should be sufficient to share with a friend, rendering this dining experience relatively wallet-friendly considering the quality of the food on offer. A well-stocked bar and helpful staff provide ample reason to linger.

  • High point: Fantastic quality of food
  • Low point: Very eclectic stereo

Very hit and miss pub at the moment. I live just round the corner and it's been one of my locals on and off since about 2004. I have basically stopped eating here though as the food, although perfectly nice, aALWAYS takes an aeon to arrive.

Staff are pleasant however the management need to look at a couple of things: 1. they've always run out of something on the taps. 2. When I ask for an Erdinger, I'd like an Erdinger glass to go with it. Not a Tennents glass, nor a tumbler like I got the last couple of times I've been in. Actually the last time I got a Guinness it was given to me in a Tennents glass so at least the pub is consistent in that respect. Finally, the music is a wee bit generic loungecore - pretty tiresome.

Just had rubbish service at the goat on argyle street - not only did they get the order wrong and forget my main, when i complained they said it was not their fault - i said, thats not very helpful and they should work on their customer service skills - only to be told i should work on my attitude and as a compromise they would not charge me for the food i didn't get! - can't say i'll be back in a hurry and really wouldn't recommend it as a dining experience!

Although I have never eaten at the Goat and the decor etc. is very nice, the two occasions that I've ever been there have been ruined by one thing. The bar staff turned at closing time - they seemed to get very brisk and almost aggressive about getting us out. Now, I know that in most pubs you will hear a shout of 'Right folks, move outside please!' but here it seems that even before the allowed 15 minutes drinking up time they begin shouting and running around at top speed clearing glasses and putting furniture away from outside. It has made me feel really uncomfortable on both occasions and the fact that I have only been back once since the first time after living 100 yards away for a year says something, I think.
It's obviously a really good tactic for getting people to leave but I think maybe they might reconsider if they want their customers to come back. I have worked in pubs for years and everywhere I work there has generally been a policy of leaving the customers be until 12.15am and thereafter they are ASKED to finish up their drinks, chairs are put up etc. and they are said goodnight to. The point of that is that the customer continues to be treated like one until they have left. At the goat it's as if as soon as licensing hours are over so is their patience for their clientale.

We booked out the snug yesterday (very last minute) for the England game and some food/drinks for a friends birthday and I cant stress how lovely the staff were, seriously I don’t think ive came across a nicer and more friendlier group of girls in the one venue they were so helpful and the food was great. All round great experience!!
