Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Formerly a little sister venue of Stravaigin, the erstwhile Liquid Ship was bought and renamed by MacLean Leisure, owners of Rab Ha’s and Lock 27, in early 2011. But it’s largely business as usual at this cosy little café bar. The scale of the cuisine is limited by the lack of a proper kitchen, but they make do fantastically with what little facilities they have. There’s a distinct Spanish flavour to the menu, between the Andalucian filled piece of chorizo, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic mushrooms and Jarlsberg, the La Mancha platter of soused anchovies, goat’s cheese, romesco and artichoke, and tapas at five for £7 until late. The house speciality is the flavoursome ‘Mafioso dog’ – Italian sausage from local butchers Andrew Reid sliced on a hot baguette topped with melted cheddar, fried onions and drizzled in American mustard. Live entertainment in the basement venue includes acoustic music at the Free Candy Sessions every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and the Rialto Rhythm and Soul Club on the first Saturday of the month when the bar also gets a 1am licence.

  • High point: Tapas served until 11.30pm every night
  • Low point: Posterior-punishing chairs

Reviews of The Liquid Ship (171 Great Western Road, Glasgow)

2. Hopeful Fox, Glasgow – 22 June 2011, 6:01pm1 starThe Liquid ShipReport

So recently there has been whispers that the liquid ship has changed hands. There certainly seems to be changes afoot when it comes to staff and the covering up of the word 'liquid'.

I have long been a fan of the liquid ship but the new ship has thus far been majorly disappointment.

The pub owned by the Stravaigin team used to provide cheap and great food with a friendly poured sly pint.

Ug... last time we were in we had to order at the bar, as 9 minutes after asking food the new staff did not come over. Ordering the classic steak sandwich you'd think it couldn't go wrong - the menu is very very similar to the liquid ship and the same booklets are used.

Pah, it looked good when it arrived but a big cheap roll with unripe tomatoes and a all too few pieces of chewy steak arrived. The salad too was ruined as someone had way overdone the lemon making it too acid to eat. Needless to say the plates were not removed ten minutes after we had finished so i dumped them on another table.

So disappointing. I hope that whatever changes have been made improve the quality of the (liquid) ship rather than, as I have seen so far, lower it. We shall be going to the Stravaigin for lunch in the near future.

The only reason I didn’t award five stars is because The Liquid Ship doesn’t seem the most popular bar even on Fri/Sat evenings but this is I suspect wholly owing to location, although perhaps the layout inside doesn’t help in that it is alittle bit draughty. But that aside: the food is always really, really good and much more competitively priced than Stravaigin. The cocktails are lovely, the wines well chosen and staff excellent. And you can always get a table.
