Perhaps it's the red with yellow trim colour scheme, or the asymmetric arrangement of rickety tables, but there is something vaguely down-at-heel Gallic about Café Grande. Edinburgh scenes (for sale) dot the walls of this rough-round-the-edges Bruntsfield bistro-cum-café, and the presence of single diners signals its welcoming, attitude-free style. Locals come in for just a coffee, an after-work burger or go full tilt at the evening specials. A peppery haggis n’ mash stack is fine; a parmesan-draped mushroom, leek and pine nut risotto as unctuous as any self-respecting risotto should be, without needing the pointless slosh of balsamic vinegar on top. For mains, a Spanish-y tomato-and-pepper-based chicken and chorizo stew with chick peas, potatoes and a side of brown bread warms and fills, but the grilled coley isn’t the freshest and a sweet-sour tang lends an odd taste to the accompanying orange chowder. By now you’ll be eyeing up the desserts in the cabinet, so give in to temptation and the delights of the strawberry mousse cake or the Bailey’s chocolate cheesecake.
- High point: Low-key neighbourhood atmosphere
- Low point: Balsamic with everything

Café GrandeReport -
Took my girlfreind for a Valentines evening meal and was very pleased with the offering here. Very understated decor, nothing pretentious but the service was very attentive and the food really was superb. It makes you think how some places, especially new trendy establishments can still charge ridiculus proces and the food is often far from memorable. I would definately recommend you try it out!
