Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

From lunchtime until late into the night, Bunker provides a stylish refuge for students and young office workers. Pale wood floors and light walls make this Bath Street basement even more spacious than it seems, while curved leather seating and lines of booths create areas that are a bit more intimate. Impressive promotions include all drinks for £1.20 on Tuesdays and £1.40 on Thursdays, while students get 20% off their food bill. The menu relies on modern bar staples, with selections of salads, wraps, sandwiches, pastas and burgers. There is also a choice of starters such as home-made soup – which could be a rich lentil and bacon purée served with thick slices of wholemeal bread – or bruschetta – two toasted boats of ciabatta topped with garlicky strands of melted mozzarella and sun-blushed tomatoes. Mains go more global with chilli, stir-fry and a curry of the day. From a range of fajitas, the chicken option comprises tortillas, a hot plate of caramelised onions and peppers mixed with strips of under-spiced meat, and paper pots of grated cheddar, sour cream and salsa. All food is cooked on the premises with the exception of puddings, which include a rich chocolate fudge brownie cake.

  • High point: Spacious setting
  • Low point: Fajitas lack kick
