Perhaps as a symptom of being a music venue, bar and hang-out for various bands, Mono has succeeded in cultivating a relaxed, cool image for itself. The décor is warm, with mismatching dark-wood seating, and a mixture of framed artworks and music posters covering the walls. The service is friendly and unhurried, all lending to the impression that – however popular they are – Mono don’t really try that hard. The all-vegan menu, however, seems to reflect far more attention-to-detail than they may like to let on. The starter of potato rosti on a bed of spinach was so beautifully presented it could almost pass for nouveau cuisine, and was cooked to an equally impressive standard. The main courses come in sizes fit for even the most ravenous. The falafel platter is particularly plentiful, served on a heaving plate complete with houmous, pitta bread, sweet potatoes, sautéed Mediterranean vegetables and a variety of salads. The classic Mono veggie burger is amongst the best vegetarian burgers that Glasgow has to offer, and is served up with similarly lavish accoutrements. However much they may try to hide it, the true talent and effort involved in places like Mono will always shine through.

  • High point: Menu of huge variety
  • Low point: Being too full to try the highly recommended vegan cheesecake

Comments for Mono (12 King's Court, Glasgow)

1. Jule9, Glasgow – 23 July 2008, 5:43pmReport

Following a very lovely free acoustic gig by Moby, we stayed on to order some food. Nearly an hour later, we got our dessert but no sign of our big Mono burger. We were informed that we got the dessert first because we had ordered it at the same time (!), then we discovered that our burger had been given in error to Moby's backstage crew! No apology, no refund, no remorse whatsoever, even when I spoke to the owner about it. I had paid for the food on ordering, so I did eat the burger when it eventually arrived but did not enjoy it.
I won't be eating in Mono again - customer service is not on their menu.

I had a not dissimilar food experience to the comment from Jule9, so I thought it worth adding my thoughts. Myself and 3 friends went to Mono for some lovely vegan food. I had been before and very much enjoyed the food on offer. Unfortunately the standard had dropped and we were left disappointed on this occasion. This would not however put me off giving them another try.

The difficult bit to fathom was the logic behind sending all of our courses at once! The table was overflowing, and of course the main courses wre cold by the time we had eaten the starters. When we spoke to the staff we were told it because we'd ordered them together. We felt they were a little too cool for school therefore not worried about the poor service. It is a real shame as the place has a nice atmosphere and clientel, and normally fantastic food on offer. I will think twice about taking friends there again as our vegan guests were less than impressed!

3. ammyface, Glasgow – 5 August 2008, 12:47pmReport

I have to say I agree with the other two comments put here. I first found Mono at the end of a pub crawl and absolutely loved it. There weren't any problems back then with service but the last few times I've been in it has been slow and sloppy, most recently with the food that was eventually delivered being completely wrong. I really really want to love Mono but I think I'll be switching to the other vegetarian places for a while.

4. Steven McSeveney, Mono, Glasgow – 17 November 2008, 10:06pmReport

I am the new manager at Mono and we want all of our customers to enjoy great food and service. We are working very hard to ensure this will be the case in future and invite you to give us another try - I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

Special apologies to Jule9, above, who came to eat on the night of the Moby show. Without wishing to make excuses, Moby is a major international star who decided to play an impromptu concert at Mono and our staff found it exceptionally difficult to maintain standards given the sheer number of people who showed up to see him.

We hope you'll allow us to make it up to you.

5. FAZ, Glasgow – 12 February 2009, 11:41am(4s)Report

I stumbled across Mono again a few weeks back was pleasantly surprised , had a fantastic veggie curry, huge portion for what we paid followed by fruit crumble which was delicious and again probably enough for two . The place has a really relaxed atmosphere and even had live music on the night we were in . Staff seemed attentive and the food came quickly , I'll definitely be going back.

6. Ma, Glasgow – 10 December 2009, 10:45pm(2s)Report

I heard a lot of good things about food at Mono and been there a few times for a drink. Last week I went there for lunch for the first time and this was a huge disappointment. While the vegetable pie was good, the accompanying chips were cold and... there was a PUBIC HAIR in them. Gross! I will never eat there again.
