Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Located opposite the still-attractive Italian Centre, Committee Room No.9 stands as a block of functionality amid its stylish surroundings. The name and interior structure of the building leave customers in no doubt about its original purpose and the wide choice of dishes duly satisfies the basic needs of hungry patrons. Checking out the menu online may save time as in addition to the seven main courses, there is a broad selection of pastas, salads, pies, jacket potatoes, burgers, salads and sandwiches. Among the mains, many regulars stick with the popular fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, but the Chicken Kiev, though tasty, may be a bit oily for some. For starters, there are the ‘sharing plates’, which include nachos, mezze and mini meatballs, as well as a choice of two soups. With the Cullen Skink unavailable, the soup of the day-tomato and lentil- was a perfectly pureed, pleasant-tasting first course. Among half-a-dozen desserts, the New York baked cheesecake served with clotted cream is smooth, light and creamy and packs a perfect closing punch. The service may be too laid-back for those short on time.

  • High point: A few pearls to be found in the sea of dishes
  • Low point: The jacket potatoes: neither ‘generously filled’ nor ‘served with a market salad’

Reviews of Committee Room No.9 (18 John Street, Glasgow)

Gorgeous building, lovely decor, but it ends there i'm afraid.

Service is slow.

Food was shocking, I would have expected better in prison!

Cold soup to start, followed by fish and chips which came wrapped in a month old newspaper (god knows how many hands had been on it) , on top of a dirty wooden chopping board, which is highly unhygienic.

My friend got 'Mince & Tatties' which resembled one of those plastic non-fantastic micro meals you get in the supermarket for £1.49, and was clearly microwaved.

McDonalds looked more appealing by the time we left.

They did take off the 'bad' food, but all in all, was an overall bad experience. I certainly will not be back for seconds. Could not put myself through that again.

This is a good pub, but the review above must have been taken straight from G1's Press team.

It's not the 19th hole for councillors and it looks nothing like a committee room.
