Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Occupying the basement of the impressive St Andrews in the Square Church, Café Source (the name hinting at its commitment to the provenance of their ingredients) provides a haven for relaxed dining. Though a large space, low lighting, candles and carefully placed tables make it ideal for either a quiet dinner or a celebration with friends. To begin the meal, plump and juicy mussels are soused in an ale-infused cream that brings out the sweet roundness of the seafood, while a similarly well-executed starter of a haddock and leek tart is topped with a perfectly poached egg and drizzled with a subtle mustard cream sauce. A moist prosciutto-wrapped chicken breast is accompanied by earthy wild mushrooms and tender roasted vegetables making for a satisfying main course. The duck breast, though perfectly pink, lacks the requisite crispy skin and does not quite work with the accompanying poached pear. For dessert, the velvety sweetness of the crème bûlèe hides a delightful contrasting raspberry sauce while the tablet ice-cream would satisfy even the sweetest of sweet teeth.

  • High point: Relaxed atmosphere
  • Low point: Duck and pear not the best of bedfellows

2. GlasgowX, Saltmarket – 15 June 2010, 1:16am5 starsCafé SourceReport

An excellent and reliable, top quality restaurant - unreservedly recommended. As a local resident, I'm a bit hacked off by all the "hard to find", "urban jungle" hysteria found on most sites regarding Cafe Source - it's right in the middle of historic Glasgow, yes, there's a bit of lively activity from time to time but this is a vibrant city. The locals are lovely people provided you don't patronise them. Get youself to the Cafe Source and enjoy the best Scottish cuisine!

To put it briefly - This place is a hidden gem, well worth the walk to Saltmarket. Friendly, helpfull staff serve a delightful aray of top quality well presented food. A perfect choice for a night out where stuffiness and dressing up is not important but excellent food is. My wife and I have visited several times and I'd happily recommend the place to anyone. Enjoy!
