This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
The Guildford Arms’ ales have been quenching the thirst of Edinburghers for more than a century, and this remains a popular venue for lovers of good beer and, increasingly, for diners looking to sample high quality food in a relaxed atmosphere. The well-proportioned bar, which is decorated with bold, thistle embossed wallpaper, attracts a mix of regulars and tourists, and the upstairs gallery offers additional dining space as well as an opportunity for people watching. Lunchtime diners select from a menu that is expanded in the evening and has a Scottish influence in the form of Shetland mussels and Stornoway black pudding. But there are also unexpected delights such as miniature marinated pork bruschetta – chunks of meat skewered on rosemary and served on garlic toast. A steak and Dark Island Ale pie brims with flavour and coq au vin falls from the bone, its flavour enhanced by the addition of black pudding. If there is room, the chef’s daily changing desserts could include an apple and mango brûlée or warm chocolate fondant pudding.
- High point: Great ales and excellent food in traditional surroundings
- Low point: Difficult balance of time-rich tourists and rushed office workers

Saw Yard of Ale and FC Ukulele on Saturday night. The place was packed but it was a fantastic show! And it was free!
