The Canon's Gait boasts an impressively grand entrance on the Royal Mile, which carries a plaque detailing the history of the pub and the surrounding area. Inside, clean cream walls house a relaxed bar area dotted with large circular tables and a low, comfy sofa. Lunch is normally fairly busy, the clientele a mixture of local office workers and exploring tourists (there's currently no food service in the evenings). The menu is short but sweet, unpretentious and straightforward. A selection of filled baguettes will appeal to those looking for a quick bite. The fresh spinach and rocket salad mingles with toasted pine nuts and parmesan shavings, though the hefty dose of balsamic vinegar may not be to everyone's taste. Mini vegetable spring rolls are very prettily presented, crisp and well-matched with a chilli, lime and coriander dip. The steak and ale pie comes with vegetables and chips, very overcooked and undercooked respectively. The beef itself is tender and tasty, though disappointingly topped with a stale shell of puff pastry. Vegetable stir-fry has a crisp mix of onions, peppers and babycorn with sesame egg noodles. There are no desserts available.
- High point: Reasonable prices
- Low point: Blaring music from the kitchen

Wonderful, friendly service, with 'happy to help' staff . You feel a guest- not a customer- a difficult feat on the very busy Royal Mile.
Wide variety of drinks, all at below the norm price, with a selection of real ales in tip-top condition.
Food, I was told, is soon to change, so looking forward to that;
Though delicious- my table waited a little longer than we would have expected for our mains. Compensated though, by once again, the wonderfully attentive staff- who kept us well watered and smiling with their "banter".
