Cocooned within old, dark wood-panelled walls, this traditional bar and adjoining restaurant have always shared an innately cosy atmosphere, especially with evening candlelight reflecting in the huge antique mirrors. Thankfully the latest custodians, owners of neighbouring Fishers restaurant, have simply smartened up this well-loved place since taking over in February 2008 and have quickly found their own loyal following with an impressive meat-based menu. The restaurant's white-aproned waiters, appealing wine list and seasonally inspired à la carte menu all hint at a French influence. However, more exotic flavours are not barred from the kitchen and a piquant starter combines spicy chorizo and sweet aduki beans with perfectly char-grilled chilli and lemon squid to great effect. A divine main course of venison steak is the deep burgundy of medium rare, its tender richness matched by a port and redcurrant jus and creamy Dauphinoise potatoes. The permanent specialities menu doesn't let standards slip and is full of hearty fare, such as onion soup, steak and kidney pie and knockout fish and chips. Mercifully light home-made desserts, including treacle tart and baked lemon and blueberry cheesecake, make a fittingly delicious finale, before retiring to the bar for a well-earned digestif.
- High point: Sublime meat and fish dishes
- Low point: Slim pickings for vegetarians

Yes, it is really worth 5 stars! I have been several times now and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere in the cosy restaurant makes a star on it's own. To find table cloths on tales without paying for their laundry is another plus. The food is well presented, and tastes, more importantly, top-notch. Good wine list to choose from and all very well priced. My only comment to the owners is to make sure that ALL waiters use trays to serve or clear glasses on, it would add to the already high service standard. A small point I know. Without gushing on, I recommend you to go and see for yourself. It really has changed into a most welcome delightful little gem of a place. Just GO and enjoy.

I completely agree with the review above - 5 stars for a wonderful little gem, its small coziness only addsd to its charm, large windows open up to Leith Harbour and an immense mirror opposite allows the whole room to soak up the sunset as you tuck in to the best mussels and fresh seafood around - their specials ensure that people adverse to fish aren't castigated to the salads, wonderful food at a resonable price, lovely staff, what more could you want?
