Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

With its battered couches and huge wraparound windows overlooking Gibson Street, the River Kelvin and the fringes of Kelvingrove Park, Offshore is possibly the West End’s finest café for kicking back and watching the world go by – and it’s built a sturdy reputation on that fact. Owner Evie Pryde has endeavoured of late to widen the place’s appeal – between obtaining a BYOB licence and booking the occasional live music session, while art displays continue in the basement – but the basics remain what Offshore does best: great hot drinks and snacks in a cosy, careworn setting perfect for whiling the hours away. No kitchen facilities means all the food is brought in from local suppliers – pre-made panini, sandwiches and bagels, soups including a hearty Cullen skink, daily hot mains such as lasagne al forno or veg chilli, and home-baked pastries and cakes. Situated close to Glasgow Uni, a new primary school, the park and various businesses and shops, all from students to mums, dog walkers, suits and shoppers drift in from morning until night keeping the atmosphere glowing.

  • High point: Warm even in winter time
  • Low point: Possibly overdue some new furniture and lick of paint
