Caramel
Location Date Tickets
Charming, bitter-sweet debut feature from writer-director Labaki that centres upon the 'Si Belle' beauty parlour in the Lebanese capital and the dramas of the female clientele. The film is impressively acted by a mostly non-professional cast. While there are no references to the on-going strife in Lebanon, this is still a political film, and a tender tribute to female solidarity.

The Empire Exhibition 1938: Films in Scotland

A rare screening of seven of the documentaries sponsored by the Films of Scotland Committee and produced primarily for the 1938 Empire Exhibition. The purpose of these films was to promote Scotland both nationally and internationally.

Even Dwarfs Started Small
Location Date Tickets
Herzog's brilliantly bizarre parable about a remote penal colony inhabited by dwarfs, who stage a revolution in the prison warden's absence. This has to be seen to be believed, unmissable.
Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow 21 May Wed 6.15 0141 332 8128
Glasgow International Bike Film Festival: Seasons/Home

The inaugural Glasgow Bike Film Festival freewheels into town, aiming to bring together some of the finest filmmakers at work today and capture the excitement and spectacle of all aspects of the genre. Following seven of the world's most accomplished riders through four seasons of the year, this screening of 'Seasons' will have something for every biker. Honeydripper
Location Date Tickets
It's 1950 in rural Alabama and morally circumspect pianist Tyrone Purvis (Glover) is trying to save the Honeydripper lounge from bankruptcy and his ass from prison. Although this benign and jolly tale is too long and features too many characters, Sayles' ability to spin a good yarn remains undiminished, irreproachable, enviable and all too rare.

Playtime
Location Date Tickets
Monsieur Hulot, tussling with the modern world as usual, follows a group of American tourists around a garish and hi-tech Paris of concrete and glass. Undervalued later Tati, with the actor Tati's slapstick of old overshadowed by Tati the director's masterly control of the widescreen frame.
Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow 18 May Sun 3.40 0141 332 8128
Reprise
Location Date Tickets
Using a short film of workers returning to work in the Saint Ouen Wonder Factory after the general strike of 1968 as a starting point, Le Roux obsessively tracks down the individuals involved. His furtive documentation provides an intriguing filmic platform for retrospection.
Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow 17 May Sat 2.00 0141 332 8128
Son of Man
Location Date Tickets
An ambitious new interpretation of the Gospels by the South African theatre and film ensemble Dimpho Di Kopane. The Saviour is born amid a civil war in the fictional African state of Judea. As he grows up he sets out to free his people from oppression through an ethics of non-violent protest and solidarity.

Throne Of Blood
Location Date Tickets
It's Shakespeare's Scottish play, Japanese-style, as samurai Mifune is spurred on by his wife and the spirits to murder his best friend and then his master. Although the barest plot and striking images remain from the original, Kurosawa's atmospheric settings in mist-shrouded forests give the film a brooding power.
Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow 20 May Tue 6.00 0141 332 8128
Under the Bombs
Location Date Tickets
Filmed during Israel's 33-day bombardment of Lebanon in 2006, this heartfelt road movie follows wealthy Shi'ite woman Zeina (Farhat) and Christian taxi driver Tony (Georges Khabbaz), as they travel from Beirut to the devastated south. Aractingi steers clear of political sermonising and instead concentrates on showing the impact of war upon a society's infrastructure and its civilian population.
Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow 19 May22 May Mon & Thu 6.30; Tue 8.30; Wed 3.45 0141 332 8128
Underdog (Subtitled Screening)
Location Date Tickets
This live-action film from Disney that features a crime-fighting dog with super-powers, although a seemingly attractive proposition for fans of both the talking-animal and superhero genres, is merely a wayward affair with none of the humble charms of the 1960s cartoon series.
Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow 17 May Sat 11.30am 0141 332 8128
Water Lilies
Location Date Tickets
The growing pains of a trio of 15-year-old girls, set mostly in the municipal swimming pool in a Parisian suburb, translate into arrogance and sexual confusion in their games of one-upmanship, social climbing and sexual awakening. This first time writer/director's effort is all too predictable, but is enough to make Sciamma one to watch.
