Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

Susie's keeps things simple and cheap, excelling at feeding wholesome food to hungry people as it has done for over a decade. Tucked among the studenty hang-outs and shops of West Nicholson Street, its premises are calm and homely - window seats, pale paintwork and an eclectic assortment of scrubbed-wood tables lend a lovely, low-key feel to the dining room. A daily selection of hot and cold dishes is served at a canteen-style counter and there's a wonderfully home-made feel to all the food. Expect huge helpings of lasagne crammed with chunky vegetables, hearty chillies or the diner's exceptional cashew pie, dished up alongside a selection of inventive, mainly vegan, salads. A large-sized plate could easily satisfy two people, so order modestly and leave room for organic, fair trade coffee and cake. The berry-filled flapjacks and gooey brownies are heavenly, but perhaps best of all is the light and moist raspberry-cream sponge, a nostalgic evocation of summer picnics and home baking. Smoothies, juices, teas, beers and organic wines are also available, or you can bring your own bottle for a small corkage fee. In the evenings, grab a drink and sit back at a candle-lit table to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and regular live music, which ranges from ceilidh to klezmer.

Reviews of Susie's Diner (51–-53 West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh)

1. James L, Edinburgh – 19 February 2009, 4:20pm4 starsSusie's DinerReport

I am a student living just around the corner and Suzie's provide a tasty, nutritious option when I have to make amends for my regular diet of kebabs and beer. The food is good, at £8 a plate it is a little expensive compared to some takeaway options, but given the quality of the ingredients and the pleasant atmosphere it is worth it. If you are looking for somewhere to eat every day you'll soon tire of the menu, but it's a great once-a-week type place.
