Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Unique, and maybe just a little zany, this flighty butterfly and dashing pig have made a rather refreshing splash across the Glasgow pub food scene. Eclectic retro décor typified by wingback chairs, velvet poufs, art deco crockery and odd, narrative wallpaper make the whole place feel a little like taking tea with an eccentric old aunt. But this is not a bad thing in the world of pub dining rooms. The menu, reprinted regularly due to a policy of favouring locally-sourced and in-season produce, introduces each dish in a delightfully quirky and original manner. The 'Lamby the Lamb cutlets' are served with an apple and mint jelly as well as a fluffy cumulonimbus of mash potato. Drizzled in a light rain of lemon juice, butter and fresh parsley, the mixed wild mushrooms (chantrelles, oysters and shiitake) arrive at the table still sizzling in their orange Le Creuset pan. The home-made carrot cake, spicy with dried fruit and cinnamon, is the perfect way to finish tea with a favourite aunt.
