Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

With the neo-gothic Glasgow University tower and the formidable Kelvingrove Museum dominating the horizon outside, Drawing Room boasts one of the most glorious views for a West End bar. Window seating has been maximised so that punters can take in the sights with their pints, while butter-soft leather sofas and suede booths provide more comfortable points for watching the world go by. But the cultured vista is also brought indoors, with the bar showcasing emerging artists' work. The atmosphere is lively and friendly, due in no small part to the jovial staff who make every customer feel like an old friend, and serve up a good range of cocktails and quality food. Tapas-style dishes such as crispy king prawn tempura or sticky sesame chicken skewers are great to nibble on, but pub favourites are also available for a bigger feed. The house speciality burger of lean, juicy beef, packed with fresh coriander and served in a bun with crunchy salad and tangy tomato chutney, could almost be mistaken for a healthy meal option if it weren't for the mountain of golden hand-cut chips that accompanies it. The rich steak and Guinness pie is equally substantial, though it would benefit from a meatier filling. Two of the burgers can be had for a bargain £6.95 at weekday lunchtimes.

  • High point: A great burger with a great view
  • Low point: A tad draughty

Used to really enjoy going to the Drawing Room, until yesterday. Toilets were closed, staff hadn't bothered telling anyone ordering food or drink that there were no facilities, and when we complained that it would have been nice to know earlier the manager told us to "go somewhere else then".

Well, it's not as if we could "go" there anyway so we aceepted his suggestion and left. Won't be back with that attitude.

On behalf of Drawing Room I would like to sincerely apologise to the customer above for their recent experience. I own the Drawing Room with my business partner David and we pride ourselves on the level of service and friendliness of our staff to our customers. We take customer comments like this very seriously. The incident highlighted was completely unacceptable to us and we have dealt with this internally. I would also like to add this is very much an isolated incident involving a new member of staff (who was not the manager). I'd like to take this opportunity to offer the customer a complimentary meal with drinks as a small token of our regret. Our staff are widely regarded as some of the most friendly and attentive in Glasgow and Drawing Room is here to offer a warm, friendly, laid-back environment in the West End for people to enjoy and relax in. Stephen

The Drawing Room exceeded our expectations for a group brunch of 55 folks. Stephen was happy to accommodate us outside their normal business hours, helped us devise a menu that fit our tastes and budget and delivered with good service and excellent food (amazing smoked salmon/creme fraiche sandwiches, veggie skewers and good ribs). Our guests particularly appreciated the fresh fruit and veg after a week partaking of Glasgow's finest, fry-it-all fare :) Raves also on the coffee. Great private room for informal gatherings.

My partner and I visited the Drawing Room this weekend for lunch and were very happy overall with the food and the service. We couldn't fault the staff at all - very friendly and genuinely interested in whether we were enjoying the food. The food itself was brilliant, and after we arrived the place started the get busier. We're definitely recommending the Drawing Room to our friends and family - the relaxed atmosphere was perfect for a blazing hot Summer's day, and it was nice to have the option of dining outside as well as inside. Thanks again for a great afternoon, you'll no doubt be seeing us again! x
