The Tron Theatre enjoys a reputation for its commitment to producing innovative original work and the thriving bar is evidence of the venue's continuing popularity with the Glasgow arts crowd. The Victorian Bar, the oak-panelled dining room in the heart of the building, is elegant and formal without being stuffy. There's a choice of two menus: an extensive bar menu offering a range of sandwiches, baked potatoes and light meals throughout the day for around a fiver as well as more substantial mains for less than £7; and a brasserie-style pre-theatre menu from 5pm with starters such as fluffy, deep-fried fish-cakes or a chunky pork terrine with spiced pear chutney. Of the main courses, a tender rack of lamb oozes juice and a pan-fried breast of pheasant from the specials board adds seasonal variety, undermined slightly by the over-cooked roasted veg and unappealing pale boiled potato slices on the side. For dessert, a thin wedge of dark chocolate tart is velvet-textured but lacking in flavour; by contrast, the poached pear is sweet and heavily infused with mulled spices. Alternatively, a cheese board is available for a £2 supplement.
- High point: Professional and courteous staff
- Low point: Toilets a bit neglected
