Once upon a time, the Tron was the undisputed hub of Glasgow's art crowd. A constant coterie of theatre lovers mingled with other creative types in this vaunted Glasgow arts venue for cutting-edge drama and low-key musical events. However, with the advent of other arty spots in town - and more competition in the Merchant City district - it has become quieter. On 'dark', no-show nights, the Tron can sometimes feel a little empty. Nevertheless, the charm of the wooden Victorian pub/restaurant and the slickness of the modern café/bar still have the potential for a warm, sociable atmosphere. A fish and vegetarian-heavy menu is full of good Scottish ingredients. Smoked salmon comes with a light potato salad, and the hearty soup has whacking great hunks of freshly-made bread on the side. The duck confit doesn't work quite so well, surrounded by an arguably overpowering moat of grain mustard sauce. But, the goat's cheese tart, hidden under a mountain of rocket kicked up with an earthy drizzle of truffle oil, is packed with peppers and caramelised onions. Regardless of any lack of customers, staff are almost always friendly and accommodating.
