Located in what is fast becoming the city’s only remaining ‘alternative’ quarter, the grungy 13th Note is one of Glasgow’s main live-music venues, and a popular hangout for young and hip Glaswegians. Things get pretty lively here at the weekends, but on weekdays and at lunchtime it’s a great place to drink beer and listen to good music in relaxed surroundings. The café at the back of the bar has no frills but offers a pleasant enough environment to enjoy well-cooked, and excellent value, vegan or vegetarian food. The menu ranges from predictable vegetarian versions of meat dishes to substantially more inventive fare, and the success rate is generally high. Curried aubergine parcels with coconut and coriander chutney are superb, and the standout among the starters. The mains feature pad thai (pan fried noodles with vegetables in a peanut sauce), risotto cakes, and a rather bland sounding Indian thali. The best bet is probably the excellent sweet potato and aubergine curry, or alternatively the veggie burger, highly recommended with a side order of onion rings. At weekends there is a veggie brunch until 5pm.
- High point: Good value, laid back ambience
- Low point: Noisy extractor fan

The 13th Note Café/BarReport -
This place is a perennial favourite. Gorgeously scruffy, it is the perfect place to feel comfortable if you have a tendency towards clumsiness. In many Merchant City watering holes if I accidently knock over my beer, I'm panicked that it's stained a hand polished slate floor and splattered up some Timorous Beasties wallpaper.
For my money, this is still the best place in town to chow down on some vegan and vegetarian food. Their cheesecakes are delicious, if a little heftily priced, but really worth it as a sweet treat. The service is casual, friendly and not intrusive and the seats and tables are basic but comfy, with the alcoves adding a nice feeling of cosy privacy.
On my last visit, I ordered a quinoa dish which came with honeyed peanuts and this has been the first meal I've had here which was actually quite bad. Most times the food is tasty, cheap and filling. They also do a burger and pint deal during the day in the main bar area, so it's great for students and if you're strapped for cash.A must to visit if you're veggie, vegan or gluten intolerant as there's something tasty for everyone.
