Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

Down the wynd of stairs between Cockburn and Market streets is Chang Thai, a vibrant establishment serving delectable dishes. The subterranean setting is enlivened by a canopy of fake ivy on the ceiling, copper-coloured walls and smiling golden buddhas. Each glass-topped table also contains individual treasures of coffee beans, seashells or tapestries. Thailand is further presented to the customer through a series of freshly made dishes. A steaming tom kha soup has overtones of lime, chilli and coriander. A dish of toong tong consists of crunchy, golden filo parcels of minced chicken and vegetables. Mains include a very good pad phed prig thai oon, with slices of meaty duck amongst leaves of holy basil, soft grilled aubergines and peppers in a rich gravy. For dessert, a new take on the ubiquitous banana fritter is slices of banana tucked into a flaky roti pancake and drizzled with caramel syrup. Front of house staff don brightly coloured t-shirts and their relaxed demeanour contributes to the festive atmosphere, fitting for both birthday celebrations and romantic evenings.

  • High point: Delicious meat dishes
  • Low point: Hard to spot

This was my second visit to Chang Thai and it was just as good as the first. The food is absolutely delicious. I had the tempura green curry and my partner had the Pad Thai.
For dessert we both had the banana fritters with ice cream. The staff are lovely and the restaurant cosy and relaxed.

Will definitely return again when we are next back in Edinburgh

This must be one of the best Thai Restaurants in Edinburgh. The food is delicious at a reasonable price and located only a 2 minute walk from Waverley Train Station. You cant go wrong.
The massaman curry is delicious and well recommended.
The atmosphere is nice and relaxed and the staff very friendly.

We ate here last night to celebrate my 44th birthday and it was superb. Friendly but not intrusive service, superb food and a good atmosphere. The only point I could mark it down was my tempura was slightly on the greasy side - could have perhaps been drained better after deep frying. Otherwise, lovely food, good value for money and we'll certainly come back. Sometimes thai food can be uncomfortably heavy but not here.

Had a gorgeous meal at Chang Thai with my husband on Valentines Night. The food was delicious and the restaurant was very cosy and romantic.
I had the Red Curry and my husband the Pad Thai washed down with some refreshing house wine. The price was very reasonable and the staff were great and couldn't do enough for us.
We had a great night out and will definitely return.

HIGHLY RECOMONEDED......

Visited Chang Thai while on a recent business trip to Edinburgh. I was with 4 colleagues and we all had different dishes. Everything we ate was delicious. The lunch menu at 7.95 is very reasonable and you are only a 5 minute walk from Edinburgh's main train station.
The decor is authentic Thai and very warm and welcoming and the staff are lovely.
Five hard to please business people left very happy.

This is without doubt one of the best Thai Restaurants in Edinburgh.
The food is delicious, the decor splendid and the staff delightful.
I would happily recommend anyone to go there. I love the curry especially the Masaman. The prices are reasonable considering you are eating right in the heart of the tourist district.....

10/10

DANGER
on xmas eve i had the misfortune of eating in this restaurant and ended up with the worst food poisoning i have never been so ill in my life.
a few hours after eating their thai green curry,my partner had to call an ambulance to get me to hospital.
i stayed in all night on a drip unable to leave for 10 hours.
i will be calling the health department to report this incident as these people are highly irresponsible and unable to handle sensitive food matter.
shocking.

I have been visiting this place (infrequently) for more years than i care to remember. Looking at the reviews it looks like the name change has reset all the reviews, and there is some pettiness going on! So time for a wee review!

Ive always like this place, i love the noisy atmosphere - it helps add to the atmosphere, sets it apart from the more up market attempts at thai restaurants and feels more authentic. Ive been to Thailand and Asia lots of times and the food here is good and not too expensive (why do thai restaurants all charge so much?!).

If your happy to recommend a place to your friends then it must be good, and i always recommend this place.

Oh, and the steps up through the close are part of the fun.

PS never seen the staff standing outside smoking, besides there is no room on the close for that!

WOW finally an authentic Thai restaurant in Edinburgh!

Great atmosphere outside and in ....down the historic Craig's Close, a wonderful setting in the Old Town of Edinburgh.

The restaurant is a must for anyone who loves Thai food - can't be beaten

Took my family and everyone enjoyed their meals - a very rare find indeed!

Thank you for your comment Good Food Finder - you appear to have posted this review across a number of websites ? Why would you do this ?

Chang Thai was started by the head chef who left Mai Thai to start up in business for herself 2 months ago and this appears to have caused no end of aggrovation from her previous employers. It must be equally frustratin that The List gave Chang Thai a very nice write up whilst Mai Thai's was less than favourable.

Why did you not raise this with staff when ( or should I say if ) you were in Chang Thai ?

Also is it a conincidence that the owner of Mai Thai is also from Tayside ?

wondered where I was going down an old close and thought I would find a gem of a restaurant, but imagine my disappointment when I arrived at a restaurant equally as dull as the lane it was in. The food was mediocre, I followed the recommendation in the list and wonder if they had eaten in the same restaurant as we had. There were lilies on the tables but the water in the vase was dirty and stale and the flowers wilting and smelling a real put of for eating. When the food arrived I had a massaman which was curdled , oily and really disappointing as this is my favourite dish, which i usually get at the Mai Thai at Old Fishmarket Close . This is no comparison. The fact when we came out the restaurant and saw a dead mouse was no help. Very poor food and kitchen staff kept shouting in Thai. I will go back to my usual reliable Thai Restaurants in Edinburgh in Future. That is Mai Thai and the Shamoli Thai at the top of the Royal Mile The fact that kitchen staff are standing outside smoking in their kitchen whites is a real put off.
