Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

What do you get if you cross Italian hospitality and Indian inventiveness in the kitchen? Husband and wife team, Parwaiz and Cristina Khan have done just that and come up with a superb neighbourhood restaurant. With the exception of tandoori dishes, which merit their own dedicated chef, Parwaiz prepares every item on the menu himself and such attention to detail shines through. Roasted lamb chops are easily overdone, but here the meat is melt in the mouth tender and well spiced. The menu has a North Indian focus, but is confident with cuisine from across the subcontinent. Murgh Seylonese, with its large hunks of chicken in a coconut, lemon and ginger sauce is both a decidedly tropical and thoroughly refreshing curry. The ajwani jhinga nisha – sizzling, succulent king prawns in a complex blend of spices, is apparently famous in India for its healing powers and presumably its delicious caraway-like flavour. Cosy décor and service so attentive you'd think you were in a front room complete the homely, but superbly polished atmosphere.

  • High point: Well matched side dish suggestions
  • Low point: Steep staircase neither wheelchair or reveller friendly.

" Are you guys for real ?"
As i had a meeting on the west side of town..I decided to meet my wife after work and get some food. we decided to go indian and headed for spice pavillions as we have tried most indian restaurant in edinburgh..
It felt claustrophobic and like enclosed in a box...my friend had told me not to bother going there as he rated it as mediocre..restaurant was quiet as it was early evening. we were given poppadums on the house
the food i just dont know what to say...the curries were greasy and utter crap and the naan bread had so much raw garlic buter on it...as we ate my wife was laughing and sighed are we jinxed or what..she even spat the chicken in her napkin...and was not willing to eat any more...we paid for the bills and headed to cafe andaluz where we continued our evening...and ordered two of their garlic bread and cheese..Now folks i travel a lot especially to london and i have to say that edinburgh does not have very good traditional indian restaurant only a few..the food was better than what kushis served. but was just atrocious. good luck to them..but folk stop writing fake reviews..

I love curry, I have eaten a lot of curries from a lot of different places, but in my entire entire life i have never eaten a Chicken Vindaloo as wonderful as the one served to me tonight at the Spice Pavilion. Put simply, its the best curry i have ever eaten!
Add the brilliant service, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings and we have ourselves are ruddy marvelous dining experience. I will be back!

We took a chance and ate here last night after seeing a review in The List. There were four of us, one of whom is a veggie. Every dish was delicious. We had two chicken dishes, a lamb dish and a paneer veggie main. The sauces were all rich ad tasty and decidedly different from one another. The spice levels were perfect. In addition we ordered 4 vegetable sides (potatoes, cauliflower, lentils and okra). Again, can't fault any of them. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I woke up this morning wishing I had some leftovers for breakfast! That doesn't happen very much when I go out to eat. I am already looking for an excuse to go back.

This Indian is absolutely amazing. The quality of food is superb and after eating at one specific Edinburgh Indian for years, I was reluctant to even try this one, but my friend insisted and now I have eaten here 4 times and wouldn't go anywhere else. Sumptious surroundings, pleasant and efficient staff. Portions are large and prices average for eating in the New Town. Can't recommend highly enough - check out their reviews elsewhere till there's more on here, no one has a bad word to say about them.
