This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Despite its relative youth, having opened in 2010, Club India already has the air of an old reliable. Located right on the busy thoroughfare of Lothian Road, the restaurant is perfectly poised to pick up passing trade from the nearby hotels and business centre. Inside, the cavernous, neutrally decorated space may lack a distinctive atmosphere, but it's a pleasant enough place in which to pass a couple of hours and the table service is quick and efficient. Start with some enjoyable, crumbly-centred samosas or the lightly spiced hara bhara spinach cakes, which are cooked on a traditional tawa or Indian griddle and arrive crispy on the outside with a sweet, moist centre. The main course rogan josh features a generous serving of lamb chunks marinated in medium hot spices while the vegetarian kofta malai are richly textured, stuffed cottage-cheese balls cooked in a sweet, tangy tomato gravy with cream. Both are worth trying alongside the tarka dhal, a warming concoction of split chickpeas, cumin, garlic and red chilli as well as the light, bubbly naan bread, made to proprietor Khalil Mansoori’s secret recipe.
- High point: Excellent starters and side dishes
- Low point: Rather lacking in atmosphere
