Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

A pocket of goodness between the main drags of Bruntsfield and Morningside, Rocket is a bright and sparkling white café with chunky wooden tables and colourful accessorising: on one wall a painted tree drops its green leaves, while a handful of quirky artworks adorn another. Rocket uses good-quality ingredients – free-range chicken and eggs, sustainable tuna, locally grown veg – to create simple, fresh, seasonally inspired dishes. Soups such as leek, carrot and chive or parsnip, courgette and dill are delicious; sandwiches come in a choice of breads with tasty fillings such as gruyere, basil and roast red peppers. Also served up are breakfasts, baked potatoes, salads, and on Fridays, a stew. Coffee, supplied by Artisan Roast, is superb and the smoothies, such as raspberry, blueberry and apple are a fab way to go towards getting your five a day. Rocket is passionate about creating food that people want to eat, and everything is made on the premises, including the dizzying array of flapjacks, cookies, brownies and muffins – the strawberry one is fat, sweet and light with vanilla and fruit.

  • High point: Attention to detail with all dishes
  • Low point: Gets packed out

Reviews of Rocket Café (41 Morningside Road, Edinburgh)

1. Marcela, Stockbridge, Edinburgh – 14 April 2011, 4:08pm5 starsRocket CaféReport

This is probably one of my favourite places in Edinburgh! I used to live just around the corner from it and was going almost every week for brunch! I actually started going since it opened over 2 years ago and am happy to tell that neither the service nor the quality have decreased since it opened, in fact it has become better and the prices are still very reasonable.

The food is AMAZING and great quality and excellent value for price. Anything you order is delicious! so it is always difficult to make a decision! the cakes are to die for and the coffee is really good.

The staff are all lovely and really friendly, I definitely recommend this place and have it in my favs-list! I do recommend you to go early for breakfast or a bit later after noon because the place is tiny and usually packed (which probably means I am not the only person who loves it!).

Happy eating!
