Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

From the moment you enter this large, bright, airy room, owners Annemarie and Mario are close by and have firmly stamped their personalities on Altura. The cooking is Sardinian to reflect chef Mario's origins and although there are pastas and pizzas they sit alongside more unusual dishes like the starter of grey mullet cured roe. This intense taste of the sea, a Sardinian delicacy, is served simply with rocket, great parmesan, olive oil and warm Italian bread. The tomato sauce accompanying the calamari starter deserves attention too for its rich deep flavour. You get the feeling it is an old family recipe. A regular special is the veal T-bone steak which is cooked with tarragon and lemon to melting perfection. The house red is well priced and full bodied enough to go with the veal and the other big mains. Desserts, however, can be disappointing and feel like an afterthought compared to the quality of the previous courses. Altura offers two dining experiences: safe pizzas and pastas and adventurous, authentic Sardinian.

  • High point: Unusual ingredients
  • Low point: The desserts

I had a groupon voucher for Altura that i purchased for £29. This was clearly a bagain, and despite my total bill being £17. i'm feeling very let down by this place..... my wife and i had open ravioli with scallop and prawn. pasta was nice, the sauce was nice, but had one prawn and scallop..........this was a tenner a pop according to the list price for main, "venison"....which tasted like it was out of a tin......and fillet steak that was supposed to be medium rare, was tiny mas medium well........ sauces were lovely, but the service was diabolical. was like the episodes of ramsey's kitchen nightmares. potatoes had burnt eyes. limited desserts. Do not pay full pricce. absolutely not worth it. Service and the owner were reason never to go back.......Avoid

If only the star ratings allowed a minus. Visited this restaurant whilst helping my daughter to move into the area, and took the 'early diner' special menu for three of us. Without doubt the most disappointing restaurant meal I have had this year, except the bowl of olives, which was generous and tasty. The starters heralded what was to come: a slab of chicken liver pate too firm to spread on the toast; iceland tiny prawns hidden under a blob of sauce from a jar. The bruschetta was at least generous with the tomatoes but where was the basil promised in the description?
The mains: the chicken dish arrived with 4 or 5 chunks of chicken breast that had been dumped in tinned sauce with a few squares of red and yellow pepper, with over cooked veg on the side. The penne was in the same tinned sauce and was made edible with the parmesan the waiter offered. I can make better lasagne at home.
None of this was cheered up by the service, which was grumpy and aloof. The kitchen needs an italian chef pronto (if the chef is italian then his mama didn't teach him) and the italian waiter needs charm lessons.
