Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Many of Glasgow’s Indian restaurants have a Punjabi slant, and Urban Pind is no exception. It’s refreshing then to find that its choice of dishes can still surprise. Those seeking an alternative to the ubiquitous chicken pakora can opt for the mazang chicken – pieces of tender chicken in a spiced batter, served with a mouthwatering tamarind dip. The starters don’t skimp on size and the lamb tikka boti kebab offers a plentiful portion of beautifully marinated meat. As well as the old-favourite dishes, the choice of mains gives the chance to sample slow-cooked handi cuisine, wok-style karahi dishes, and more. The menu also includes a helpful history of the different cuisines offered. From the Shahi Pakwan range, the mughalie murgh makhani’s rich creaminess makes it similar to a korma dish but with ginger and cardamom offering a greater depth of flavour to good effect. Meanwhile the Punjabi tawa masala arrives sizzling hot and delivers on taste as well as temperature. Elegant surroundings and pleasant, attentive staff make this a restaurant that deserves to be sampled.

  • High point: Sizzling Punjabi tawa masala
  • Low point: Large restaurants can lose intimate feel
